A bite guard is a dental appliance molded to fit your teeth. Because store-bought versions often fit poorly, guards are usually made in a dental lab from an impression taken at your dentist's office. Common reasons include protecting your teeth, tongue and cheeks during sports, and guarding against nighttime grinding or clenching.
Care is simple. Rinse the guard before and after each use, clean it occasionally with cold water and mild soap, and store it in a hard, ventilated case away from heat, which can warp it.
Possibly, if you play contact sports or a dentist diagnoses you with bruxism (teeth grinding). Wearing one while you sleep can help prevent wear from grinding or clenching.
Your dentist takes an impression of your teeth and sends it to a dental lab, which builds the guard. You pick it up at the office, usually within a few days.
Yes. Guards wear down over time and eventually need replacing. Bring yours to checkups for inspection and tell us if it stops fitting well.
