Preventive care is central to dentistry. The American Dental Association recommends regular visits, usually about twice a year, for cleanings, exams and treatment consultations. Professional cleanings remove plaque that brushing and flossing miss, and let your dentist spot problems early.
According to 2010 CDC data, dentist visits decline with age: about 79% of children ages 2 to 17 visit, compared with about 61% of adults under 65 and 57% of adults over 65. Cleanings and exams matter no matter how long it has been.
Plaque can collect in small crevices, grooves and pits even with good home care. Left alone, it can lead to decay, pain and tooth loss.
We examine your teeth and gums, with x-rays if you have not had them in a while, and you can discuss any concerns with your dentist. A hygienist removes hardened plaque and polishes your teeth, then your dentist reviews any treatment recommendations.
Brush after meals, floss daily, use fluoridated toothpaste and drink fluoridated water.
