Professional whitening can lighten your teeth noticeably, often in a single session. It is offered in the office or as a take-home treatment and uses stronger agents than over-the-counter products.
Teeth darken naturally with age, and foods, drinks, medications and habits can stain them too. Professional whitening can remove years of staining, and results can last with good oral care and recommended take-home treatments.
Patients with discoloration but otherwise healthy teeth and gums are often good candidates. Whitening may not be right if you are pregnant or sensitive to whitening agents. A consultation will confirm.
Your teeth are cleaned and polished and your gums are protected. A whitening agent is applied and activated, then rinsed off. Results depend on your natural shade and the type of discoloration, and lightening by several shades in one visit is typical.
Some tooth sensitivity is normal afterward. You may be asked to avoid strongly pigmented drinks like tea, coffee and wine for at least 24 hours, and you may receive a take-home kit.
