TMJ refers to the jaw joint and the muscles around it. Problems with this joint are called temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), with signs like jaw pain, tenderness and popping or clicking when you talk or chew. Untreated, TMD can lead to headaches, bite misalignment and tooth damage.
TMD is the second most common pain-causing musculoskeletal condition in the U.S. Up to 12 percent of Americans may have some form, yet only about one in three seeks treatment.
A dentist must first examine you. Initial care is usually conservative, such as self-care, physical therapy and bite guards.
Every patient differs. You may be asked to avoid sudden jaw movements like yawning wide, sleep on your back and manage stress.
It depends on the treatment. More aggressive options like surgery may require a temporary liquid diet and keeping the site clean and dry.
