Crowns and bridges are custom-made restorations that repair or replace damaged or missing teeth. Crowns, also called caps, cover natural tooth structure or dental implants. Bridges fill the gap left by missing teeth and attach to neighboring natural teeth or crowns. Both are fixed in place and cemented by your dentist.
The Etruscans were among the first to use crowns to restore teeth. Today, crowns and bridges are customized to your bite, can often be placed in one or two visits, and can last many years with good oral care and regular checkups.
A crown may suit a damaged or decayed tooth that is still intact. A bridge may suit a missing tooth with healthy teeth on either side. We will recommend the best option after a consultation.
The affected teeth are reduced to fit the restoration, and an impression of your bite is taken so it can be made. Porcelain restorations are shade-matched to nearby teeth. If a lab is involved, a temporary restoration may be used until your permanent one is ready.
Temporary sensitivity to hot and cold is normal, and the gums around the restoration may be sore. Ibuprofen usually helps, and soreness typically fades within a few days.
