Dental sealants are clear coatings placed on children's molars to prevent decay. They fill the grooves where food and plaque collect and cavities often start. About 1 in 3 U.S. children ages 6 to 12 have sealants.
Sealants can last 5 to 10 years and can be placed as early as age 6, when the first molars come in. Ideally they go on soon after each molar appears.
They harden into a clear or tooth-colored coating that is hard to notice. Kids may feel it with their tongue at first but get used to it quickly.
It is quick and painless. We clean the tooth, paint on the sealant, and it hardens right away to block bacteria from the chewing surface.
No. Children should still brush and floss daily with fluoride toothpaste, see the dentist regularly and eat a balanced, low-sugar diet.
