Provisional restorations are temporary prosthetics used during complex restorative procedures. They let you preview the look and feel of your final restoration and request changes before it is made. Modern provisionals are made of acrylic resin designed to resemble permanent metal or ceramic restorations.
Provisionals are a key part of smile reconstructions. Beyond looks, they hold space for your permanent restoration, protect prepared teeth, help preserve the health and contours of your gums, shield exposed dentin from bacteria and plaque, reduce sensitivity, and let you eat and speak normally.
Possibly, if you are getting a crown, bridge, veneers, dental implants or another permanent restoration. They may also be placed while a dental lab finishes your permanent restoration.
The dental lab builds your temporaries from impressions and digital images of your teeth, and you approve a wax-up before they are made. Your dentist prepares your teeth and temporarily attaches the provisionals until your permanent restorations are ready.
Wear time ranges from a few days to weeks for crowns or veneers, and several months for implants or full-mouth reconstruction. Provisionals are less durable than permanent restorations and are held with temporary cement, so they can shift or break. Keep up good oral hygiene, follow any dietary restrictions, and wear protective mouth gear during sports or high-impact activities.
